Please READ the following info so you can be prepared for the Lake Lesson:
The kayak lake lesson includes an introduction to club and lake rules, the
equipment the club owns, and the basics of kayak safety and paddle strokes.
You will be required to capsize the kayak and demonstrate an underwater
wet-exit, so be prepared to get wet!
Things to bring:
1) Hoofer Outing membership card
2) clothes and shoes that can get wet (Note: it is important to wear shoes
because there may be broken glass or other hazards on the lake bottom or on
the dock. Modern kayaks have very little space for your feet, so low profile
shoes like aqua socks work best. Old tennis shoes or sandals that can get
wet are the next best choice. NO flip flops -- they fall off.)
3) dry change of clothes, towel, plastic bag for wet clothes
4) If you plan on taking the swim test after the lesson you will need a long
sleeved shirt, long pants and shoes
5) optional, but very nice to have: a strap to keep your glasses on,
noseplugs, water, sunscreen, and a warm fleece and windbreaker if it's cold.
NOTE: With the cool weather and the cooling water temps, it is strongly
recommended that you bring a long sleeved SYNTHETIC top and pants to help
keep you warm. A fleece pullover and/or a windbreaker will also help keep
you warmer.
For the swim test you will swim 50 yards in three (3) minutes or less,
demonstrating the side stroke at some point, and continue to remain afloat
for a total of five (5) minutes. This swimming should be done while dressed
in a LONG SLEEVED SHIRT, LONG PANTS and tennis shoes or a facsimile thereof.
No neoprene is allowed to be worn with the exception of neoprene shoes.
After successfully completing the Kayak Lake Lesson, you will have earned
the Kayak Lake Rating and you will be allowed to use Club equipment on Lake
Mendota (your life jacket must be worn at all times). The kayak lake rating
and swim test are required before you can go to SAC (your first moving water
practice, and where you can earn an R1 rating) or take a sea kayak skills
lesson for an SK0 rating.
