Date and time: Saturday, December 29, 2007
Location: Mystery Cave
Contact: houssam nassif nassif at wisc.edu 608-443-9168
Description: have you ever wandered in a cave with a map as your only guide?
have you ever wondered how do cavers draw their maps??
well, here is your chance to learn how!
come help surveying Minnesota's longest cave, mystery cave!
Surveying is a fun and instructive process.
No GPS involved, no aerial photography... all is done in the rudimentary way:
a compass, a clinometer and a measuring tape.
Add to it biological and geological features to keep an eye to.
You will get a different feeling of caves after surveying them, and suddenly find yourself making attentions to details you never noticed before.
Mystery cave is dry and warm, the cave passages are a combination of big walking size to crawling.
There will be many survey parties (groups of 2-4 ppl each), with different level of difficulty. You can join the one that suits your caving expertise.
We have to be at mystery cave by 10am. It is a 4 hours trip from Madison. We can leave Saturday at 6 am, or Friday evening and sleep there. We can also leave the cave on Saturday evening or on Sunday morning. I am open to all these possibilities.
The cave office has a locker room and shower. It makes it nice to not have to change out in the cold. Anyone wanting to stay the night will be staying at the cave manager's house. If so, you'll need to bring a sleeping pad and sleeping bag.
The only expense is the cost of gas and your food.
What you need to bring:
- 8 AA batteries
- an extra flashlight
- gloves
- trash bag
- caving clothes and shoes (these will get really dirty)
- fresh clothes and shoes to change into after caving
- water and snacks
- a sense of adventure
optional but nice to have:
- knee pads
- cheap camera
- cave pack
the club will provide:
- two head lamps
- a helmet
